Daniel Gold family operated a ferry.

18th-century ferry drawing by Sidney King, artist and historian

Daniel Gold and his family operated a ferry on the Dan River in North Carolina during colonial times. Perhaps their ferry looked similiar to these models. To read about this model go to http://www.modelboatyard.com/ferry2.html

Very little is known about colonial ferries. Some years ago, the remains of one was discovered in the Trent River in North Carolina and archaeological study of that ferry has given a few clues about their construction.

This is a painting of Ferry Farm, where George Washington spent his boyhood years, The foundation that owns the Farm, along with some other historic groups in the area, wants to create a replica of a colonial ferry (also known as a "flat"), such as might have been used to cross the Rappahannock River at Ferry Farm in the middle 1700s.

Cyprian Bulloch, Jr.
page 502
Cyprian Bulloch, Jr., a wealthy farmer and active man of business of Meriwether county, in which he was born in 1848, is the son of Cyprian and Lucinda (Grey) Bulloch, North Carolinians, who were among the first settlers of Burke county, Ga. Mr. Bulloch was born in 1802 and died in 1892; his parents were Stephen and Mary (Bussey) Bulloch, of North Carolina, the father a soldier in the war of the revolution. The mother of Cyprian Bulloch, Jr., was a daughter of Samuel Grey, a South Carolinian who served in the war of 1812, and having drawn some land in Georgia, came and settled upon it, at a time when the country was very sparsely settled. The young Cyprian passed his early years on the farm with but a limited education. He developed a talent for agriculture, and in 1876 made his first investment in land, to which he had added at intervals since until he now has an immense plantation of some 1,200 acres of fine land. Besides his farming interests Mr. Bulloch is engaged in various mercantile enterprises in connection with the firm known as Bulloch, Bussey & Co. In 1872 Mr. Bulloch married Miss Julia Parkman, who was born in this county in 1853, and is a daughter of Henry and Mary (Glanten) Parkman, South Carolinians, who moved to Georgia in 1846; Mr. Parkman served in the late war. Mr. and Mrs. Bulloch have been blessed with seven children: Henry, Mattie, Julia, Minnie, Andrew, Ira G. and Samuel T. The parents are both members of the Baptist church; Mr. Bulloch is also a member of the masonic fraternity.
Mary (Bussey)

(Conflicting records) There are marriage records for Stephen Bulloch to 'Winnie Robinson'. Mabel Bulloch Harry's DAR application - also lists Winnie as the wife of Stephen Bulloch. This biography lists Mary Bussey as the wife of Stephen Bulloch. I do not believe the biography is correct on this detail.)

Notes for Cyprian Bulloch, Jr.:
"Warm Springs: Home of a Hatchery...and a President. Another old-timer in the Southeast, Warm Springs NFH came into existence as a result of 1898 legislation authorizing the establishement of a "fish cultural station" in Meriwether County, Georiga. This small community of Warm Springs, 65 miles southwest of Atlanta, was called Bullochville before its incorporation in 1924.

In 1899, brothers Cyprian and Benjamine Bulloch and their cousin Sarah J. Bussey, owners of a 1,500 acre plantation in Meriwether County, donated 16 acres of land to the Fish Commission upon which to construct a fish hatchery. This acreage included three natural springs to supply water for hatchery operations. From these springs,
water flowed out of the ground at a constant temperature of 62.6 degrees Farenheit."
